Have you ever considered the sheer focus of a creature? Take the Canada goose. In this picture, it’s not particularly doing much—just standing, observing. Its long neck is held high, its gaze fixed on something we can’t see. It seems fully present in its surroundings, perhaps alert for danger, a mate, or food.
The word “watchful” comes to mind. This goose is watchful. And it makes me think about how much more watchful our Heavenly Father is over us.
When we are in a season of waiting, just standing in the proverbial field, it can be easy to feel lost or unseen. Our gazes might be fixed on our problems, but God’s gaze is fixed on us.
Matthew 6:26 (ESV) says:
“Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”
This verse is a beautiful reminder of God’s provision. If He so intricately designs and provides for the birds—even one as common (and sometimes, let’s be honest, annoying!) as a Canada goose—how much more will He provide for you, His beloved child? He values you immensely.
The goose in the picture isn’t anxious; it’s simply there, trusting the field to provide grass and the environment to be survivable. We, too, are called to trust. We are called to stand alert, but with peace, knowing that our Creator is watching over us, and that our value in His eyes is incalculable.
Some other Scriptures that come to mind:
“He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”— Psalm 91:4
***
“keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.”— Psalm 17:8
***
“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”— 1 Peter 5:8
***
“Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.”— Colossians 4:2
This week, when you see a goose, or any bird, let it be a reminder: Your Father sees you. You are valuable. And He will provide.
