The Open Bible, NKJV, published by Nelson Bibles, is a comprehensive resource designed to enhance your understanding and study of Scripture. It’s more than just the biblical text; it’s packed with tools to help you delve deeper into God’s Word and enrich your spiritual journey. This Bible aims to make the Word of God more accessible and understandable for everyone, from seasoned theologians to those just beginning their exploration of the Scriptures.

Catching My Eye and Notable For Me

This Bible includes a wealth of study aids, carefully curated to provide context, clarity, and deeper insights into the text. Some of the highlights that caught my eye include:

  • Comfort Print: The 9-point print is designed for comfortable reading, making those long study sessions much easier on the eyes. The precise design of the typeface reduces eye strain, allowing for extended periods of reading and study without fatigue. This feature is particularly beneficial for those who spend significant time immersed in the text.
  • Topical index: I love that the topical index is located in the front, allowing for quick and easy access to key themes and concepts throughout the Bible. This feature enables readers to trace specific subjects across different books and passages, fostering a more holistic understanding of the Bible’s overarching narrative and interconnected themes.
  • Study Guides: Main learning points are emphasized with blue boxes and headings highlighted in blue, providing clear guidance through the text and meanings and explanations. These visual cues help to quickly identify and grasp the central ideas and concepts within each chapter and book, making it easier to follow the flow of thought and to retain key information.
  • Extensive Back Matter: The back of this Bible is filled with even more resources. I’m particularly excited to use the 60-day Story of Scripture and the read-through-the-Bible-in-a-year plans. These tools offer structured approaches to engaging with the Bible, whether you’re looking for a quick overview of the grand narrative or a more immersive, year-long study.
  • History of the English Bible: I was pleased to learn about the history of The English Bible and its development, including a listing of other English versions. This section provides valuable context on how the Bible has been translated and transmitted through history, giving readers a deeper appreciation for the work that has gone into making the Scriptures available in English.
  • Reference Sections: Including weights and measures, a Jewish calendar, and Bible archaeology sections is incredibly helpful for understanding the historical and cultural context of Scripture. I also really enjoyed the facts about the Bible section. These resources offer valuable insights into the world in which the biblical events took place, shedding light on the customs, traditions, and societal structures that shaped the narratives and teachings of the Bible.
  • Jesus Focus: I like that there are separate sections listing the parables of Jesus and the prophecies of the Messiah in Jesus for quick reference. This arrangement allows readers to quickly locate and study the teachings of Jesus, as well as the Old Testament prophecies that foreshadowed His coming, deepening their understanding of His life, ministry, and significance.
  • Maps: And, of course, I’m always grateful for the maps, which provide valuable visual context. These maps help to illustrate the geographical settings of biblical events, allowing readers to visualize the journeys, battles, and migrations described in the text, and enhancing their comprehension of the historical and spatial dimensions of the biblical narrative.

  1. It sounds like a great study bible. I should really invest in a study bible. I usually just use an on line web service like Enduring Word to help me understand a passage.

  2. This seems like a wonderful study Bible. I love that it has a Jesus section. I don’t recall ever seeing that in a Bible, but now that you’ve mentioned it, it seems obvious, right? Thank you for this review!
