Sometimes a song comes on the radio and hits so deep it instantly brings tears to your eyes. You don’t just hear the words; you feel them in your soul.

That happened to me recently while driving with K-LOVE playing on the radio (of course). A song by Leanna Crawford came on called “Thank God,” and as soon as the chorus hit, I thought to myself: “This is me. She’s singing about my life, too.”

Consider The Chorus

“Thank God

For all the times that He said no

Thank God

He let me walk the harder road

Thank God that not too soon

When I was lost

His light broke through

And even when I think it’s over

Sеcond chances still come true

Thank God”

The song reflects on looking back at our lives and realizing that every closed door, every unanswered prayer, and every hard road was safe inside the shadow of His hand. When she sang about being thankful for all the times God said no, the tears just came.

Looking back across my life, I see so many hardships, failures, deep hurts, heavy griefs, and all the times I messed up (even as a mom) or took a wrong turn and I’ve crashed many times. In those moments, it felt like my whole world was crumbling. But hearing those words reminded me of what my sweet mom used to tell me whenever life felt overwhelming: “He’s got it under control, and He already has a solution.”

Mom was right. God was never surprised by my hard days. He didn’t abandon me when things fell apart. Instead, He was using those very trials to build my faith. One thing I always find myself saying is, “I’m thankful for lessons learned, even the hard ones.”

Without those hard-learned lessons, I wouldn’t be the woman I am in Christ today—and looking at who He has shaped me to be, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What This Song Means for Us

For so many of us, a “no” from God feels like rejection or abandonment in the moment. We pray fervently for something—a door to open, a relationship to heal, a burden to be lifted right now—and when the answer is delay or a flat-out “no,” our hearts break.

But this song reminds us that God’s “no” is often His protection in disguise.

When God says no, He isn’t keeping good things from us; He is guarding us from things that aren’t meant for our ultimate good or His ultimate glory. Looking back with the eyes of faith allows us to see that His detours are intentional, His timing is flawless, and His mercy is present even in our deepest griefs.

Application: Finding Peace in the Closed Doors

How do we take this heart of gratitude and apply it as we walk through a tough season?

  • Shift Your Perspective on “Closed Doors”: When a door shuts, instead of forcing it open or sinking into despair, pause and thank God for His divine guardrails. Trust that if it was meant for you, He would have opened it.
  • Remember His Past Faithfulness: When you feel anxious about today, look back at yesterday. Remember the times you thought you wouldn’t survive a heartbreak or a failure, yet here you are, standing in His grace.
  • Hold On to Truth in the Middle of Uncertainty: When life feels out of control, remind yourself of the truth my mom shared with me: God already has the solution before you even realize there’s a problem.
  • Embrace the Growth: Don’t waste your trials. Ask the Lord, “What are You teaching me through this?” and allow the hard lessons to refine your character and draw you closer to Him.

Fitting Scriptures to Hold Close

  • Genesis 50:20“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”
  • Romans 8:28“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
  • Proverbs 3:5-6“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
  • Psalm 138:8“The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.”

The Takeaway

Life’s hard roads aren’t easy, and nobody asks for grief, failure, or hurt. But when we place those broken pieces into the hands of a loving Father, He turns them into something beautiful.

If you are walking through a season of “no” right now, take heart. God hasn’t forgotten you. He has it under control; He already has the solution, and one day, you’ll look back and thank Him for the hard lessons that made you who you are in Christ.

And: Food For Thought

Sometimes when we feel like God has rejected us let’s flip it and think maybe it’s God REDIRECTING us”.Me

  1. Hi, Paula. You are so right. I’ve had many no’s in my lifetime! One of them was about my husband and his fish tanks. Kevin didn’t have those pretty little ones that are colorful. He had the piranha and another looking like a snake with sharp teeth. Heck, it could have been an eel. I hated them. They each needed their own tank. These were in Kevin’s apartment with his roommate before we were married. I never even thought about it being an issue until after we were married and he was moving his ‘stuff’ into our new apartment together. Oh how I disliked the looks of the two aquariums. Eventually he got rid of them. Fast forward 35 years. We bought a new to us home. This home came with an in-ground swimming pool. I guess those ugly fish aquariums was God’s way of teaching Kevin how to care for the pool water chlorine and acidity 🤣
    Have a wonderful, cooler week!
    All the best.

    1. Oh my goodness Debbie what a story! I would have felt the same way. And yes maybe it was God’s way of teaching him how to take care of a future pool. Lol.
