I am so excited to be linking up today to participate in the summer One Word Sensory Challenge at Lisa’s! There is something so grounding about slowing down and exploring our life experiences through the lens of our five senses.
If you’ve been following along, you know how powerful it can be to pick a focal word for the season—or the year—and let it gently guide your perspective. Today, I’m peeling back the layers of my word and bringing it to life through touch, taste, sound, and smell.
Touch
If my word had a texture, it would be all about gentle, lingering comfort.
First and foremost, it feels like my dog’s warm, velvety ears. There is nothing quite like petting your sweet fur baby after a long day—that soft, velvety fur instantly brings a wave of calm and reassurance.
Alongside that cozy warmth is my new cooling blanket! It has a wonderfully silky texture with raised bubbles, and it gently hugs my body while keeping me so refreshed. It feels purely luxurious to wrap up in, creating the perfect balance between cool ( but not cold) comfort.
Taste
If my word had a flavor, it would without a doubt be a decadent caramel sundae, complete with a rich drizzle of extra caramel sauce!
Caramel is my absolute favorite. It is so savory, sweet, and indulgent that I can’t help but make happy little “yummy” noises every time I eat it! LOL. It represents pure, unadulterated joy and savoring life’s sweet blessings.
Hear
What does my word sound like? Above everything else, it sounds like silence.
I love to savor quiet moments. Silence is deeply soothing and relaxing to me—a sacred space where I can pause, reflect, and tune into God’s still, small voice. It allows me to be intentional, opening my heart to feel if the Holy Spirit is gently speaking or touching my spirit with something I might otherwise miss in the busy noise of daily life.
11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.
1 Kings 19: 11-12 (NIV)
At the same time, I find comfort in the low, steady hum of home. The rhythmic whir of a fan and the cool breeze of an air conditioner are pure bliss to my ears. In fact, yours truly sleeps with the fan on all year round!
That steady white noise creates a peaceful sanctuary for rest.
Behold, these are the fringes of His ways;
Job 26:14 (LSB)
And how only with a whisper of a word do we hear of Him!
But His mighty thunder, who can understand?
Smell
Finally, the scent of my word is sweet, lush lilac.
Lilacs are one of my absolute favorite smells in the entire world. When they’re in bloom, it’s not at all uncommon to catch me with my face buried straight in a lilac bush, eyes closed, just savoring that magical aroma away. It’s an instant reminder to stop, breathe deep, and delight in the natural beauty around us.
Over to You!
Exploring my word through touch, taste, sound, and smell has been such a refreshing exercise in mindfulness and gratitude. A big thank you to Lisa for hosting this wonderful challenge!
If your current season had a sensory texture or flavor, what would it be? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Intentional and Mindfulness were previous past years WOTY. Intention is a great word.
That’s such an interesting question and it’s really making me stop and think because I quite dislike the Summer because of its heat… So the first word that comes to mind is humid an sticky…
The older I get the hotter I get, so I like being inside in the air conditioning. I also like autumn and winter.
Mmmm…Lilacs! That scent reminds me of days playing outside in the yard and bouquets of those fragrant flowers that I would bring home to my mom!
Same here Kym, reminds me of playing outside too and I always brought some in to my mom.
I’ve heard of a warming blanket, but never a cooling blanket, Paula. I recently purchased bamboo sheets, and they are cool and refreshing. They make a HUGE difference! Can you tell me more about your cooking blanket? Silence is a beautiful gift! Oh, the smell of flowers! I’m transported into gratitude at the thought. Thank you for helping us to pause and savor His goodness.
The smell of lilacs is one of my favorites too!
These are such rich choices, Paula! I could sense each of them as you described them. My favorite may be savoring the velvety ears of your dog. I can almost feel it now! 🙂 Thanks for sharing these.
