As we move onward into 2026, I find myself holding onto my Word of the Year from 2025: SAVOR.
I know I wrote about savoring the heavy snowfalls last winter, but as the white flakes blanket the Northeast this winter, I just can’t help myself. I have to talk about it one more time. There is something so profoundly spiritual about a heavy snowfall that demands we stop, breathe, and simply savor the moment God has painted for us.
The Gift of Holy Silence
Have you ever noticed how the world goes quiet when it snows? Science tells us this is because snow is porous and absorbs sound waves—a phenomenon often called “acoustic damping.” But to me, it has a different name. I call it Holy Silence or Sacred Silence.
In our noisy, busy lives, God uses the snow to throw a soft, white quilt over the chaos. It’s a peaceful, calming hush that feels like the earth is holding its breath in worship. When I watch the snow fall from my window, I’m not just looking at the weather; I’m savoring a visual reminder of God’s peace that surpasses all understanding.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
Kisses from Heaven
The real magic happens when I take my dog out to go potty. I could just rush back inside to the warmth, but I can’t resist. I find myself lifting my face skyward, eyes closed, and arms stretched wide.
As those cold, delicate flakes land on my skin, it feels like a million little God and angel kisses falling from heaven. I get absolutely giddy! I’m out there giggling like a little kid, filled with a joy that bubbles up from deep inside.
I often wonder what my neighbors think when they see me. They probably see a middle-aged crazy lady standing in the freezing cold, face to the sky, talking to Jesus out loud and laughing. But in those moments, I am savoring the Father’s affection. I am talking to my Savior, thanking Him for the beauty, the cold, and the sheer wonder of being alive.
Savoring the Creator in the Creation
When we choose to savor, we’re choosing to notice God’s handiwork in the details. The Bible tells us:
“He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’ and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’” — Job 37:6
If God cares enough to command every individual snowflake where to land, how much more does He care about the details of our lives? Savoring the snow is my way of acknowledging His sovereignty and His sweetness.
All In All
This winter, don’t just endure the weather—savor it. When the “Sacred Silence” falls over your neighborhood, take a moment to be still. If you are able, step outside, lift your face to the sky, and catch a few of those “heavenly kisses” on your cheeks. Let yourself be giddy. Let yourself giggle. God is in the whisper of the snow, reminding us that His love is as infinite as the flakes in the sky.

Beautiful post. I love winter days when I don’t have to work. Soft snow outside, a cozy bowl of soup and a long walk with my dog – that’s a definition of a perfect day for me.
Paula we’ve had a very mild winter so far, but I will think of you next time snow brings a “sacred silence” to my backyard! I think “savor” is a wonderful word to hang on to this year. 🙂
Savor is the perfect word to remind one to enjoy every moment! I also enjoy winter days and especially the quietness of a snowy day. We’ve had a mild winter this year, and less snow than usual, but that can change in spring as we often have more moisture then.
Such a beautiful post, Paula! I love going out in the snow especially at night, it’s as if there is a holy hush. I don’t think I will look at snowfall as anything but heavenly kisses after reading this!
What an inspiring and great way to look at the snow coming down. Now I will always remember your description, we get snow. We have not had any this winter, so bring it on.
Thank you for linking to SSPS 394. See you again on Monday
Savor is a wonderful WOTY, Paula. I look forward to hearing about your journey this year. Sacred silence is holy.
I love your connecton to savor. The Lord has certainly blanketed us…and caused us to stop and to be still. I (often) want this season to pass. To hurry up and pass. But I need to slow down and savor it a bit more. Probably, quite a bit more. Thanks for the nudge!
