My word for the year is SAVOR, and it’s been a beautiful reminder to truly taste, see, hear, and feel the moments God places before me. Lately, He’s been highlighting the simple yet profound blessings all around, inviting me to pause and appreciate His handiwork.

It had been so long since I’d seen a rainbow. After a recent storm, as the clouds began to break, a vibrant arch stretched across the sky. It was breathtaking. I stood there, utterly captivated, for a good five minutes, simply marveling at its beauty before it faded away. In that moment, my heart swelled with gratitude, and I whispered a “thank you, Jesus” for that fleeting, glorious display. I truly savored every color, every curve, a vivid reminder of His promises and faithfulness.

Evenings have brought another simple joy to savor the silent dance of lightning bugs. They remind me a bit of the post I wrote about savoring winter, with their gentle blinking mimicking the falling snow. Their beautiful, blinking brilliance makes me reflect on how they are indeed blinking for Jesus. Just as Jesus is the light of the world, He has given us such beautiful creations for us to marvel at, each tiny flash a testament to His magnificent design. I find myself just sitting and watching them— Okay, talking to them too, consciously savoring the quiet magic they bring to the twilight.

And then there’s my sweet girl, Little Girl, my beagle, who will be 10 in October. She’s a constant source of joy and a daily reminder to savor companionship. Several mornings a week, when I drive to meet a friend for coffee, if it’s warm enough, I let her ride on my lap once we turn off the highway and onto the quieter side streets. It makes my heart smile to watch her in the side mirror, chin resting on the door, her hound ears blowing in the breeze. I can see the graying on her muzzle, a testament to our years together, and feel her warm weight leaning against me. I thank Jesus for her; she’s such a good girl, and He has truly blessed me with her faithful companionship. These quiet moments with her, just us, are treasures I deliberately savor.

In a world that often rushes us along, choosing to savor the little things—a rainbow, lightning bugs, the companionship of a beloved pet—is a powerful act of worship. It’s an intentional pause to acknowledge God’s presence and His abundant love woven into the fabric of our everyday lives. What little things are you savoring today?

  1. We have missed the lightning bugs for the last few years. This year they are abundant and glorious! I don’t know what made the difference, but people from different areas of the state have commented that they have seen more as well. They make a summer evening perfect!

    1. I know what you’re saying they sure are abundant

  2. I love this word! It encourages us to slow down and appreciate the moment. Good choice.

    1. I was heading to the comments to say the exact same thing, Amy! Savor is such a lovely way to describe those moments when we witness God’s gifts, which are all around us. We only need to slow down and take the time to notice!

  3. Hi, Paula. The Good Lord does work in our lives. For the longest time I have been looking for a Bible group. I’ve been to several different groups and finally found one I enjoy. Not only this, but I was invited once a month to join in on another group. This one is outside of church. A group of ladies from the church meet and play games/cards. Two of my wishes (prayers) were answered!

I really like your post. One of my 101 in 1001 goals was writing about what I was grateful for, for the complete month of October. It’s the littlest things that make the biggest impression and impact.

Today, I am savoring new found friends and the Bible group I am now a part of.

    Take care and best wishes.

    1. Debbie that’s wonderful you found new friends and a study group.

  4. Wonderful word, Paula, I love to savor God’s goodness all around me! I know how you feel about your sweet girl, I have one too in my 3-year-old golden retriever Shalom. What a treasure to have such blessed companions!

    1. Thanks Donna. Our fur babies are such treasures for sure.

  5. This morning I am savoring my coffee, my Scripture reading, the stillness, and an unexpected visit from my granddaughter 🙂 It really is the little things in life that often bring the biggest blessing. Wonderful post, Paula.

This is so beautiful, and so important, Paula. SAVOR is a great word of the year! I enjoyed reading everything you were able to notice and give thanks for simply by savoring. It’s still there if we aren’t paying attention, but if we are paying attention, it’s so sweet. Thanks for sharing this post with us at the Will Blog for Comments #65 linkup. #66 opens Monday and we hope to see you there.

  7. I truly love these “little” things that you’re savoring, Paula! They feel big when we actually notice and appreciate them. And you and I still call them “lightning bugs” – I think we’re in the minority, I’m discovering! ha. When I wrote about them on my blog, almost everyone in the comments referred to them as fireflies. 🙂

    1. Yes Indeed, lightening bugs for sure.

  8. You are so right about savoring the little things! They can bring so much joy!

    1. The little things really do bring so much joy don’t they?
