The world outside my window this morning was a symphony of renewal. With the back window open, a gentle, warm breeze filled the room, carrying the sweet scent of blooming things. It was one of those perfect spring mornings that just begs you to slow down and breathe it all in. And as I did, my gaze caught the most delightful scene right in my yard.

A little, fluffy baby bird was earnestly trying to conquer a bright yellow dandelion. It would hop and flutter, launching itself with all its might towards the flower, only for the dandelion to bend and the little bird to tumble. It was so determined, so full of valiant effort, and so incredibly endearing to watch. At one point, it even landed squarely on its back, a speck of helplessness upside down in the grass.

And then, from the fence where she had been patiently observing, the mama bird swooped down. With a swift, gentle flick of her beak, she nudged her baby, flipping it right side up. My heart swelled. I felt so utterly captivated by this simple, profound display of maternal love and perseverance.

In that moment, I found myself whispering a prayer, “Jesus, help me to savor this. Help me truly savor this beauty, innocence, and tender care.” And then, a further request came to mind: “Help me to remember scene and savor this feeling, this peace, this gentle warmth, in the depth of winter when the snow is blowing, and the world outside feels cold and barren.”

Why Savor?

The word “savor” implies more than just seeing or experiencing. It’s about tasting deeply, enjoying fully, and holding onto something precious. It’s about letting a moment truly sink into your spirit. And isn’t that what God calls us to do with His goodness, presence, and grace? We often rush from one thing to the next, checking off tasks, barely pausing to appreciate the blessings around us. But like that baby bird’s determined efforts, there’s a beauty in the struggle and an even greater beauty in our Heavenly Father’s watchful, loving presence.

Jesus and Us: The Mama Bird’s Love

That mama bird’s quick action, turning her little one right side up, immediately brought Jesus to mind. How often do we, in our own attempts to navigate life, stumble and fall? How many times do we find ourselves spiritually “on our backs,” feeling helpless and unable to right ourselves? And just like that mama bird, Jesus is always watching. He doesn’t always prevent the fall, but He is always there to lift us up and gently turn us right side up with His grace and truth. He doesn’t abandon us in our struggles; instead, He swoops in with tender care, using His divine “beak” of wisdom and love to guide us back to solid ground.

His love is not a distant, passive observation. It is an active, engaged, deeply personal love. He desires for us to savor His presence in every season, to savor His faithfulness even when we feel upside down.

A Winter Reminder

My prayer to remember this moment in winter feels especially poignant. Life has its winters – seasons of cold, darkness, and seemingly endless struggle. It’s easy to forget the warmth of God’s presence when the winds of adversity howl. But just as I’ll recall that dandelion, that determined little bird, and that loving mama, we can choose to savor the memories of God’s goodness in our past, allowing them to warm us in the present. We can savor His promises, knowing that even in the bleakest moments, His love is constant, and His spring will always come.

Takeaway

Let’s commit to savoring the small, beautiful moments God places in our path today. And when life turns wintry, let’s intentionally recall and savor those moments of grace, remembering that our Heavenly Father is always watching, always ready to turn us right side up with His unfailing love.
