This post is part of the Five Minute Friday blog link-up. Where I join up with a community of writers and bloggers of all ages and stages who gather around a single-word prompt to free-write, unscripted, unedited, for five minutes. This week’s word prompt is {{NOISE}}
There’s a lot of noise out there, isn’t there? A constant barrage of information, demands, and distractions vying for our attention. Sometimes, it feels like the world is shouting at us, and it can be overwhelming. For me, this feeling is amplified when I get a migraine. Suddenly, even the slightest sounds – a ticking clock, a distant conversation – become unbearable, pounding in my head like a drumbeat. In those moments, I crave silence. I need it like air to breathe. I have to intentionally block out the noise to find any semblance of peace.
And that’s when it hits me: this physical need for quiet mirrors my spiritual need for it too. Just as my head screams for relief from the cacophony of the world during a migraine, my soul often yearns for respite from the noise of daily life. The constant stream of social media and news, the pressures of the day-to-day, and the anxieties that creep in — create a din that can drown out the still, small voice of God.
Just like I have to be intentional about creating a quiet space for my head when I have a migraine, I need to be intentional about creating space for God in my life. I need to actively block out the worldly noise that threatens to consume me and seek the quiet of His presence. It’s not always easy. The world is loud, and its distractions are persistent. But it’s in those moments of intentional quiet, when I turn away from the clamor and focus on Him, that I find my anchor.
He is my anchor in the noisy storms of life. When the waves of worry crash against me and the winds of doubt howl, He holds me steady. He’s the living water that refreshes my soul, quenching the thirst that the world can’t satisfy. Just like the comforting words of Psalm 23, He “makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.”
So, how do we find God in the noise? It starts with a conscious decision. A decision to turn down the volume of the world and turn up the volume of His presence. It’s about being intentional about prayer, reading His Word, and simply being still and listening. It’s about recognizing He is always there, waiting for us to quiet the noise and turn to Him.
Let’s be intentional about seeking Him in the quiet moments so that we can face the noise of the world with His peace as our guide and His love as our anchor.
Okay… So this was longer than five minutes.

This is so good, Paula.
Thanks for sharing.
I tried to leave you a like as well but it wouldn’t let me.
Thanks bunches Sandra 🌼
CS Lewis described this world as “the kingdom of noise,” and that was over 70 years ago! We have to work hard to keep stillness in our lives in 2025!
Paula, honestly the noise gets to be too much for me as well. It is then I crave silence, the quiet with God alone. It is then that I shut off the TV, no news, stop the scrolling of online news, and just still myself for a few days. Wonderful post!
Thank you Joanne.
