Have you ever craved a warm, comforting meal that’s as satisfying as it is delicious? Me too— Look no further than Cottage Pie!
A Bit of History
I just learned that while many of us are familiar with the term “Shepherd’s Pie,” did you know that it’s often called “Cottage Pie” in the US? The main difference between the two lies in the meat used. Traditionally, Shepherd’s Pie (UK) is made with lamb, while Cottage Pie can be made with ground lamb, beef, pork, sausage., or turkey.
A Versatile Dish
The beauty of Cottage Pie is its versatility. You can customize it to your liking by trying different meats and adding different vegetables, herbs, and spices. The possibilities are endless, whether you prefer a classic version with peas and carrots or a more adventurous one with roasted root vegetables.
I usually use ground beef, but this time, I decided to give ground sausage a try. With a flavorful mixture of mixed vegetables and a rich, savory gravy, all topped with a creamy layer of mashed potatoes.

Cottage or Shepherds pie is the ultimate comfort food, so simple to make too! It’s one of my families favourites.
I was surprised to learn the difference between the two a few years ago reading recipes because growing up my family always called our cottage pies shepherd’s pies but we absolutely made it with ground beef. I’ve since tried several other variations with my own boys and I think anyway I make it it is always a hit!
I’m a real fan of cottage pie particularly in our Australian Winter. I have just signed up to follow your wonderful blog, I would love it if you followed mine too and shared recipes and life’s wonderful moments. Best, Pauline from Happy Retirees Kitchen

Great comfort food on cold days. Have a blessed day!
Thank you Carol
They served this at our church dinner last week and I wondered why it was called cottage and not shepherds pie. But now I do know. Thanks for the info and the recipe.
To be honest, I’ve never tried this pie. But yay, today might be the day! So basically, you need to cook the potatoes and the vegetables before you assemble the pie? I don’t use microwave, so will this work, if I simply boil the veggies? Do they need to be fully cooked?
Yes, you cook the veggies first, and mash the potatoes with a mixer. Then veggies go into your casserole dish first, then spread the potatoes over the top. I wouldn’t think the veggies need to be fully cooked since you will then be baking the pie also. Without looking at the recipe I don’t remember how long baking time is. When it’s done and you find the vegetables are still tougher than you’d like, just pop it back into the oven.
The perfect comfort food for these cold wintery days!
Lovely to see you back at #MMBC Paula. Have a great week. 🙂
Thank you Jayne 🤗
Looks & sounds delicious Paula! We call it Shepherd’s pie here in Australia, it was a staple growing up & one I have cooked continually for my family over the years.
You’re right the possibilities are endless! Since there’s only hubby & I at home now I cook a Bolognese which we have with gf Spaggatti & then the left overs I turn into another meal of Shepherd’s pie. Adding gf soy sauce, ginger, more garlic & veggies topped with mashed potato & grated cheese placing it under the grill (I think you call broiler) until melted & crispy. Absolutely delicious!
Blessings, Jennifer
I have so loved shepherds pie over the years.
I have never heard it called Cottage Pie before. That is so interesting. It looks so delicious. I usually make “Chicken Pot Pie with Drop Bisquits”. It’s basically the same thing but you drop the dough instead of making a pie crust. A little easier.
For some reason, it won’t allow me to comment on your latest post, but I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for featuring my post! You are such a blessing to me. God bless you always!
