I was in the mood for a snack, but the usual suspects – tater tots dipped in mayo or honey mustard – just weren’t cutting it. I wanted something a bit more elevated, a bit more interesting. I’ve made tater tot casseroles before, but that’s a dinner-sized commitment. I was looking for something smaller, something more snack-sized.

Enter the Small Batch Cheesy Garlic Tater Tot Cups. Perfect for a solo snack or a small gathering, these little cups are packed with flavor and easy to make.

With a limited bakeware arsenal (thanks to downsizing!), I turned to my trusty 6-cup muffin tin. It was the perfect size for these crispy, cheesy, garlicky treats.

Why a Muffin Tin?

I know, I know. A muffin tin for tater tots? It might sound a little unconventional, but trust me, it works! It’s the perfect size for a small batch and gives the tater tots a cute, individual serving size. Plus, it’s easy to clean up!

Why You’ll Love Them:

  • Easy to Make: A simple recipe that requires minimal effort.
  • Customizable: Feel free to add your favorite toppings or seasonings.
  • Small batch, big flavor: Perfect for solo snacking or a small gathering.
  • Crispy and Cheesy: The ultimate comfort food.

Let’s Go!

Small Batch Cheesy Garlic Tater Tot Cups

These bite-sized delights are the perfect snack. Lightly crispy tater tots are nestled in a cheesy filling. A secret ingredient, egg, gives the filling a rich, cake/hush puppy-ish taste & texture.

  • Prep time:
    5 minutes
  • Baking time:
    30 minutes
  • Total time:
    35 minutes

Ingredients

3 servings
1 bag of frozen tater tots
2 Tbsp melted butter
1/4 Cup shredded Cheddar cheese
1/4 Cup shredded mixed Italian cheese blend
2 eggs
1/8 tsp garlic salt or powder ( you can also use jar or freshly minced garlic too.)

Utensils

  • 6 Slot Muffin Pan
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Spatula or wooden spoon
  • Spoon or small scoop

Steps of preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (204° C)
  2. While the ovens heating up, place melted butter, shredded cheeses, garlic salt, and eggs in a mixing bowl and blend.
  3. Now in your sprayed muffin pan place 3 frozen tots in each cup (4 tots if your muffin tin cups are larger).
  4. Next with a small scoop or tablespoon drizzle your mixture over the tots making sure to fill the cups almost to the top. Let the tops of the tots stick out a bit.
  5. Bake for 30-35 minutes.
  6. Cool for 5-10 minutes.
  7. Enjoy!

Notes

Toppings:
I chose a drizzle of ranch dressing and just a drizzle of taco cause
Topping Ideas:
Sour cream
Green onion
Seasonings of your choice
Bacon
Salsa
Guacamole
Ketchup
Taco sauce
Hot sauce
BBQ sauce
Ranch dressing

Why add an egg? Didn’t it taste like breakfast? I have no idea, I saw it in a different recipe and thought I’d try it. I’m assuming it helps the mixture stick to the tots. And no, it didn’t taste like breakfast.

Can I improvise? You sure can. You can substitute the garlic salt/powder for another seasoning blend. And also any different shredded cheeses that tickle your fancy.
