“The Listening Life” by Adam McHugh wasn’t an immediate hit for me. Initially, I found myself struggling to stay awake during Chapter 3, a moment of irony that wasn’t lost on me. Perhaps it was a reflection of my own internal distractions, a reminder that authentic listening starts with ourselves. But like any worthy journey, moving on yielded a great reward.

Adam’s book isn’t just about listening to others; it’s about cultivating a deeper connection with the world around us. Chapters 5 and 7 touched me the most. His emphasis on listening to creation resonated deeply. The rustling of leaves and birds chirping aren’t just background noise; they’re whispers of a grand narrative, a conversation with the divine. Likewise, his insights on listening to people in pain, particularly those grappling with grief, were a poignant reminder of the vulnerability and strength that lie within each of us.

After a while, Adams writing drew me in like a warm hearth fire with its approachability and wisdom. His advice wasn’t just theoretical musings but practical, actionable steps towards building bridges of understanding with myself and others.

If you’re looking for a book that will challenge you to grow and open your ears and heart, then “The Listening Life” is your invitation. I’m thankful I kept reading, for within its pages lies a treasure trove of wisdom waiting to be discovered.

This month, I participated in Linda’s Book Club at her place Grace & Space. The Listening Life was our first book. The discussion and conversation were lively and rewarding. Stop by and check it out.
